The first thing you do when you go out to look for a new mattress is toto figure out what size do you need. Since there are a lot of types on the market, you will hav to know few things when it comes to dimensions and mattress sizes. We will start with this tutorial to cover all the basics when it comes to bed sizes.
Since there are various sizes, you won’t be able to move further then the step one in your decision making process. You need to know something before you can reach your dream bed. First thing you should do is to figure out how many people will be sleeping in your new mattress, how tall are they and is there enough space in your bedroom. You won’t feel comfortable if there isn’t enough space to move in your bedroom after you fit the new bed. So all these issues are important.
Next, you will compare those needs with the sizes that are available. We will not mention the thickness of the mattress, because that is not important right now. Lets just say that the thickness ranges from 6 to 18 inches and is important comfort wise only.
First, we have a twin size mattress, also known as single. The measurements are 39″ x 75″ and this is enough for one person. Usually, we need these for our daybeds, bunk beds or as a guest room bed. This size is perfectly fine for children, but adults may have a problem when it comes to length. If you are over 6 feet tall, get yourself a Twin XL mattress.
Twin XL or long is 5 inches longer then the regular one. A 39″ x 80″ will serve you great if you are a bit taller then the rest of us. These are usually used in dorms and can also be put together in pairs to form a king size mattress. They can also be used with electric adjustable beds since they are a but longer and provide room for feet when the base reclines. If you have ever been to hospital, you know how you change position when the bed is raised and there is less space then before. This is exactly what happens with adjustable beds.
A full size mattress is 54 inches wide and 75 inches long. As you can see, it is a bit wider and gives more comfort for sleeping, so you can toss and turn around in your bed without fear of falling down to the ground. You can fit two persons here, but be aware that they will be very close to each other and won’t have enough space to move. Actually, there won’t be any turning here at all. For something like that, you will need something different and bigger.
The queen size mattress is what is mostly used for two persons. Statistically, it is the most common size ordered for two adults. A 60″ x 80″ measurements are just enough for both persons to have enough space for turning and tossing. The comfortability with this type is quite good.
On level higher then the queen is the king size mattress which has a 76″ x 80″ measurements. This is the best there is when it comes to comfortability and space. If you have enough room in your home for this bed size and really want to enjoy, then this is what you should think about. Besides this, there is a california mattress that has 72″ x 84″ measurements. As you can see, you get a bit more height and lose some width. These two will give one benefit that is quite important. Since you will not be so close to the other person sleeping with you, the reduction of motion making will me much higher and it is less likely that you will bother one another while tossing and turning in bed.
The biggest of them all is the Grank King which has astounding dimensions. A 80 inches in width and 90 inches in length will give enough space even for the tallest person or some who want luxury at all costs.
These are the sizes that are currently available on the market. You will have to choose the one that suits you best, considering your needs and the size of your bedroom. Finding the right size is the first step in making the final choice. The next comes the type – memory foam, latex, innerspring, futon, air of waterbed.
We will get to that step in one of the next posts, as well as which company should you choose: Sealy, Simmons, Miralux, Englander, Spring Air and so on. Of course, the question of discount and cheap mattresses will also come out and we will deal with that too. For now, you need to figure out which mattress size works best for you.
