Normally you get twin mattresses in size of 39” X75”, though there are longer ones too for above average tall people. That’s good size for a guest bed also. But what do you do with a twin mattress lying around the house.
Here’s a practical option for using it as a couch provided it has its bed frame. Just ensure that the ends are uniform so that it looks like a real couch. Here are the steps for completing this simple affordable project.
Step 1: Visit a mattress store to buy bed covers. If you can’t find something that really goes well with your present interior design and colors, you may consider making one of your own. Make sure to follow the pattern of the skirt of your old twin bed.
Step 2: You will also need to buy pillows, pillow cases and bolsters. These need not necessarily be of the color of your bedcover. You may buy a different shade. It will be nice and thoughtful to buy printed pillow cases, so that you can mix and match.
Step 3: Next, dress the mattress using the mattress skirt and covers. Carefully tuck the ends so that the seams are not visible and there are no dangling ends.
Step 4: It’s time now to position the bed frame with its long side along the wall for being fixed there. The wall works as the back rest whereas the headboard and the footrest serve as arms of the innovated couch! Put the mattress on the bed.
Step 5: Now you position the pillows along wall for decorative effect. The effect will be better if you position the pillows diagonally. Use your imagination and mix and match the printed ones with the plain variety. You may leave the bolsters on the sides of the mattress or on its front.
Step 6: If you so desire, you can decorate the wall, using some paintings in colors that go along well with the rest of the existing colors of your room. You may consider adding to the height of the couch by using a mattress topper. That would provide additional comfort too.
This arrangement can be put to a still better use as a bed in case you have some guests. That saves you the expense of buying an additional bed or a separate couch, especially when you are on low budget. That way you save expense and get an opportunity to demonstrate your creativity to your guests.

1What a cool idea! This is a very creative way of using mattresses that would otherwise get no use. I will have to keep this project in mind. I would recommend speaking with someone who is familiar with mattresses and their durability in order to ensure the long life of your new “couch”.
